Is the Bottom of Your Ring Bent?
The everyday wearing of your rings can cause damage to the ring
shank (the bottom and sides of your ring). The ring shank comes in
contact with everything you pick-up. Over time the ring shank
becomes thin and breaks.
Minimum Tolerance for Ring Shank Thickness and Width
-
Ladies ring under size 6: 0.7mm thick x 1.8mm
wide
-
Ladies ring over size 6: 0.8mm thick x 2.2mm wide
-
Gent’s ring: 0.9mm thick x 3.5mm wide
Once the ring shank has reached these minimum
measurements the solution is to replace it with a new heavy shank.
Depending on the amount of damage to the shank it will have to be
replaced with either a full or half shank.
Full Shank
The old shank is cut from the ring at the 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock
positions and a new heavier full shank is installed.
Half Shank
The old shank is cut from the ring at the 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock
positions and a new heavier half shank is installed.
In the case of wedding sets with years of wear, thin shanks maybe
caused by the rubbing against each other. It’s often more cost
effective to have the two or three rings re-shanked as one ring,
which will make a strong, durable, and long wearing ring.
Now that your ring has a new shank it’s ready for many more years of
enjoyment.
